Belts & Chains

PIC Design offers a wide range of belts and chains to provide users with the most complete line for motion control and light power transmission.  Designers are no longer confined to the use of one type of drive system.  PIC offers No-Slip™ Positioning Timing Belts, No-Slide™, E*P*S, E*P*S HTD® (Metric), Round Belts, and Miniature Chain.  All are available with appropriate pulleys or sprockets in various materials. Ferrules also available.

E*P*S Synchronous Timing Belts & Pulleys

The E*P*S synchronous timing belt is the classic timing belt that provides positive, non-slip power transmission. These belts are available in neoprene rubber with nylon facing and a fiberglass tensile member, or urethane with a polyester tensile member. A Kevlar tensile member is also available as an option.  These belts are directly interchangeable with each other. The urethane belts have excellent flex characteristics which allows them to operate on pulleys with as few as 10 teeth, and ratios of 8:1 on smaller centre distances.

The E*P*S line is recommended for use on office, mailing, and data processing equipment, printers, plotters, robotics, optical, and photo graphic equipment.

E*P*S HTD Timing Belts & Pulleys

The E*P*S HTD® timing belts provide positive non-slip transmission at both low and high speeds and offer a higher load carrying capability than the E*P*S trapezoidal design, due to the deeper curvilinear shape of the belt tooth. E*P*S HTD® belts can transmit more power with a more compact package as compared to E*P*S belts, and can be used in applications where shock load is evident, such as vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, sanders, centrifuges and power tools, as well as office equipment drive systems. Pulleys are available in machined aluminium.

No-Slide Timing Belts & Pulleys

A new series of synchronous belts, combined with a grooved flangeless pulley, offers high performance timing. No-flange pulleys allow air to escape and prevents it from being trapped between the belt and flange. No-Slide belts are moulded in polyurethane with a stainless-steel core (cable). They require no lubrication, handle higher load capacities than standard timing belts, are available in lengths up to 100 feet, and can be spliced in the field for added versatility.

No-Slide belts are excellent for medical, packaging, and labelling applications, and where higher load capacity is required.  No-Slide pulleys are available in aluminium.

No-Slip Positioning Belts & Pulleys

No-Slip series timing belts feature many design elements. The polyurethane belts operate backlash free without lubrication and have excellent chemical and abrasion resistance for use in medical and food processing applications.  Positive tooth engagement offers silent No-Slip drive. No-Slip belts are available with Aramid (Kevlar) or stainless-steel cable cores in single or twin core configurations. Sprockets are available in either aluminium or stainless steel. Belts are available in lengths up to 100 feet and can be spliced in the field for added versatility.

Round Belts & Pulleys

Round belt or O-ring drive belt systems are used in a wide variety of applications such as vibration dampening in precision mechanisms and reduction of distortion in audio equipment. Round belts also provide overload protection and can act as a clutch in certain applications. Grooved pulleys are available in stainless steel and aluminium.

Splicing Kits

To complement their line of No-Slip and No-Slide belts, PIC offers a series of Belt Field Splicing Kits. Belts can be assembled in the field from bulk stock. This capability is particularly useful for those engaged in prototyping operations or repair. The kit consists of a ratcheting plier, belt positioning fixture, knife, stripper/cutter, and a supply of ferrules. The fixture assures that the belt pitch will be accurate over the splice area. The ratcheting plier-die set combination assures a consistently crimped ferrule. To add flexibility, other belt configurations can be crimped by simply purchasing the appropriate positioning fixture and a supply of ferrules.

Stainless Steel Chains & Sprockets

Miniature pitch chains are made of non-magnetic grade stainless steel. The large joint bearing area construction permits greater loads and speeds. Precision control of chain length allows for positioning accuracy between the driver and driven sprockets. Continuous and positive lubrication is recommended for maximum life and efficiency. Sprockets are available in stainless steel and aluminium. Some of the industries PIC supply are medical, military, lab instrumentation, robotics, and more.

Captive Screws

Captive Screws feature a shoulder under the head that is smaller in diameter than the root of the thread. This allows the screw to be captured between the head and threaded end when screwed into a plate with a threaded hole. The shoulder ensures that the screw will not fall out and be lost during disassembly or maintenance and prevents screws falling into moving parts or electrical circuits. PIC Design offers Captive Screws in inch and metric sizes.

Clutches & Brakes

Flange Mounted Power Brakes

PIC offers a selection of flange mounted Power On and Power Off brakes that can be actuated by either applying or removing voltage. their parts come in several voltage ranges and a number of bore sizes to complement their standard shafting.

Roller Clutches

Roller Clutches are devices which transmit torque in one direction while allowing freewheeling in the opposite direction. They are generally designed into systems to provide backstopping, overrunning or indexing. When transmitting torque, either the shaft or the housing (part retaining the roller clutch) can be the input member.

Shaft Mounted-Clutches

The PIC line of Shaft Mounted Clutches are all highly suited for situations in which an immediate response is required in either stop or start functions of driving mechanisms. The variety of voltages and bore sizes offered is aimed at giving designers and engineers especially easy access to precise components needed for their application requirements.

Collars & Clamps

PIC Design manufactures clamps which can be used as a load-bearing surface, mechanical stop, or for mounting components. A clamp will slide or wrap around a shaft and is secured by tightening a set screw. Their radial clamping design causes less damage to shafts than set screw collars. PIC offers Adjustable, Split, and Screw type clamps that are available in several styles, with reduced clearance and balancing options for demanding applications.

PIC also offers Set Screw Collars, convenient for locating and retaining components on a shaft.  Set Screw Collars are most effective when used on a shaft made of a material softer than the set screw, as the set screw will press against the shaft to hold the collar’s position.  A small recess is located 90° from the set screw as a start for a drill, which can be used to drill through the collar and shaft in order to install a pin for a more secure fit.

Set Screw Shaft Collars

Set Screw Shaft Collars are the most effective and commonly used shaft collar. They’re designed to limit the movement of the shaft and hold power transmission components, such as gears, sprockets, pulleys, and bearings, in place. The shaft collar is kept in place by tightening the set screw, which will dig into the shaft and create a mechanical lock. PIC offers set screw shaft collars in 303 Stainless Steel and 316 Stainless Steel for greater corrosion resistance.

One Piece Clamping Shaft Collars

One-Piece Clamping collars evenly distribute clamping forces for a precise fit and great holding power without damaging the shaft. They’re easy to remove and are designed to handle a greater axial load capacity than Set Screw Shaft Collars.

Two Piece Clamping Shaft Collars

Two-Piece Clamping Collars that are designed for constrained spaces and applications requiring high axial load capacities. Compared to One-Piece Clamping Collars and Set Screw Couplings, Two-Piece Clamping Collars offer superior holding power, versatility and convenience. Their split design makes them easy to install and disassemble, reducing labour and downtime.

PIC offers Two-Piece Clamping Collars in 303 Stainless Steel for greater corrosion resistance. PIC also offer a keyway style for keyed shafts.

Precision Set Screw Collars

PIC’s set screw collars are convenient for locating and retaining components on a shaft. Use the set screw to hold the collar’s position, a small recess is located 90° from the screw as a start for a drill; you have the option of drilling through the collar and shaft to install a pin for the best results. These set screw collars are best used with shaft material that’s softer than the set screw.

Gear Clamps

Gear Clamps can be used as a load-bearing surface, mechanical stop, or for mounting components. PIC offers Adjustable, Split, and Screw type clamps that are available in several styles, with reduced clearance and balancing options for demanding applications.

Two Piece Clamping Couplings

wo-Piece clamping rigid couplings are split along the axis and feature 8 socket head cap screws to attach the coupling to the shaft. The Two-Piece clamping coupling provides additional holding power over the One-Piece clamping coupling. They are designed for high axial load and torque capacity. This makes them ideal for applications that require more holding power than a set screw coupling or a One-Piece clamping coupling, without marring the shaft. The Two-Piece design also allows for the installation/removal of the coupling without the disassembly of other shaft components in many cases. These couplings are available with either equal or dissimilar bore sizes to provide additional design flexibility. PIC Design can manufacture custom metric and inch Two-Piece clamping shaft couplings to meet your exact specifications.

Dowel Pins

Precision Dowel Pins

Precision dowel pins are used to fasten and align machine parts together.

When designing mechanical components, mechanical engineers typically use dowel holes as reference points to control positioning variations. If something other than a dowel pin is used for alignment, there can be significant variation in component positioning. They can also be used as locators so that a part can be removed and will retain its accurate location when replaced. Dowel pins allow for tighter tolerances than screws.

Stainless Steel Inch & Metric Dowel Pins

PIC Design specializes in high-quality, precision stainless steel metal dowel pins — which are machined to tight tolerances, as are the corresponding holes. PIC offer both inch & metric dowel pins. PIC usually manufactures dowel pins in diameters of 1/3” to 1/2″ (1 mm to 12 mm) and lengths of 3/32” to 1-1/2” (3 mm to 50 mm). If standard dowel pin sizes aren’t appropriate for your project, PIC will happily manufacture your custom design.

Helical Gears

Helical gears have slanted teeth that are cut at an angle to the axis of rotation. This helix angle can be up to 45 degrees and can be left- or right-handed. Compared to spur gears, helical gears are quieter and produce less vibration, so they’re often used to reduce gear noise. Since helical gears have thicker teeth, they’re also stronger than spur gears, allowing them to transmit more torque.

PIC’s precision helical gear manufacturing capabilities meet the latest AGMA/ISO specifications, up to the equivalent of AGMA Q14 per AGMA 390.03.

PIC offer standard aluminium and stainless-steel helical gears available in their catalogue. PIC’s custom helical gear manufacturing capabilities include non-standard pressure angles, pitches and materials. PIC can also provide any helix angle up to 45 degrees for right or left hand.
